ACL Reconstruction Surgery
Expert Knee Surgeons in Orange County, CA
Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are very common knee injuries, particularly among athletes who play pivoting sports at high speed, such as soccer, football, and basketball. The ACL is the main stabilizer to knee motion, and also serves a prominent role in rotational stability. A torn ACL can occur after a non-contact injury, typically resulting in significant pain, swelling, and is often associated with an audible “pop” or a tearing sensation within the knee. After an ACL injury, patients will have tenderness, difficulty moving the knee, and a sense of instability. Meniscus and cartilage injuries can also occur simultaneously with an injury to the ACL.
At Newport Orthopedic Institute, our board-certified orthopedic knee surgeons are experts at treating knee injuries and giving you back your mobility. We have sub-specialists who are experienced in handling complex ligament reconstruction of the knees, including the ACL. The treatment for ACL tears is individualized, depending on each patient’s activity level, age & severity of their injury. Unfortunately, surgery is a common treatment for ACL injuries in active patients because the ACL does not routinely heal on its own. Additionally, instability resulting from an ACL tear may lead to an injury to the meniscus in which can increase the chance of osteoarthritis of the knee. Our orthopedic knee surgeons utilize the most advanced ligament reconstruction technology to help patients restore function and mobility.
Surgery to Treat an ACL Tear
ACL reconstruction surgery replaces the torn ligament with a substitute graft from the patient’s own hamstring, patellar tendon, quadriceps tendon or cadaver tissue. ACL reconstruction is performed arthroscopically which is a minimally invasively outpatient procedure.
Your orthopedic surgeon at Newport Orthopedic Institute will prescribe physical therapy to help improve range of motion and restore function after ACL reconstruction.
