Total Knee Replacement
Evidence-Based Treatments from Board-Certified Orthopedic Knee Surgeons in Orange County, CA
Knee replacement surgery, also known as total knee arthroplasty, is a minimally invasive surgical procedure designed to help patients suffering from knee pain caused by degenerative joint disease, knee arthritis, a traumatic injury/accident, or a knee deformity. Because the knees are one of the body’s most important weight-bearing joints, total knee replacement can significantly improve the quality of life of patients who need the surgery.
Am I a candidate for Knee Replacement Surgery?
When patients are experiencing severe knee pain or knee stiffness that limits everyday activities, including walking, climbing stairs, and getting in and out of chairs it is time to see a board-certified knee surgeon at Newport Orthopedic Institute for a personalized treatment plan. If nonsurgical treatments such as anti-inflammatories, cortisone injections, and physical therapy haven’t provided significant relief to your knee pain, it may be time to consider total knee replacement surgery.
What to expect from Total Knee Replacement?
Knee replacement is a relatively common procedure, and it significantly improves, if not eliminates, the patient’s knee pain through the removal of their damaged cartilage or arthritic bone surfaces from the thighbone, shinbone and kneecap and replacing it with an artificial joint (prosthesis) to restore joint integrity. This allows the patient to gradually gain better knee functionality to perform daily activities without pain or functional limitations. The goal of knee replacement surgery is to resurface the damaged parts of the knee joint and to relieve knee pain that cannot be controlled by other nonsurgical treatments.
Patients who undergo knee replacement surgery will be admitted to Hoag Orthopedic Institute. Patients can be discharged the same day as their procedure depending on the patient’s health conditions and help at home. This will allow for a more comfortable recovery safely at home. The length of the procedure varies, but usually is between 1 and 2 hours. Your surgeon will choose the technique and implant best suited for your medical condition, utilizing the latest surgical techniques as well as pain management protocols to accelerate recovery
At Newport Orthopedic Institute, your orthopedic surgeons will get you back to your daily activities by ensuring a personalized treatment and recovery plan that restores your mobility through evidence-based medicine and excellent patient care. Our knee surgeons are trained in the newest surgical techniques utilizing state-of-the-art navigation technology and specific equipment and instrumentation.
